but<\/li>\n<li>thereby to purchase himself profit, or pleasure, or<\/li>\n<li>honor, or the like. \u00a0 <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">T<\/span>herefore why should <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">I<\/span> be angry<\/li>\n<li>with a man for loving himself better than me. \u00a0 <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">A<\/span>nd if<\/li>\n<li>any man should do wrong merely out of ill-nature, why,<\/li>\n<li>yet it is but like the thorn or briar, which prick and<\/li>\n<li>scratch, because they can do no other. \u00a0 <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">T<\/span>he most tol-<\/li>\n<li>erable sort of revenge is for those wrongs which there<\/li>\n<li>is no law to remedy; \u00a0but then let a man take heed the<\/li>\n<li>revenge be such as there is no law to punish; else a<\/li>\n<li>man&#8217;s enemy is still before hand, and it is two for one. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 end of page 15<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">S<\/span>ome, when they take revenge, are desirous the party \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0page 16<\/li>\n<li>should know whence it cometh. \u00a0 <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">T<\/span>his is the more gen-<\/li>\n<li>erous. \u00a0 <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">F<\/span>or the delight seemeth to be not so much in<\/li>\n<li>doing the hurt as in making the party repent. \u00a0 <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">B<\/span>ut<\/li>\n<li>base and crafty cowards are like the arrow that flieth<\/li>\n<li>in the dark. \u00a0 <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">C<\/span>osmus, duke of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">F<\/span>lorence, had a des-<\/li>\n<li>perate saying against perfidious or neglecting friends,<\/li>\n<li>as if those wrongs were unpardonable; <em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Y<\/span>ou shall read\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li>(saith he) <em>that we are commanded to forgive our ene-\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>mies; but you never read that we are commanded to\u00a0for-\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>give our friends.<\/em>\u00a0 \u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">B<\/span>ut yet the spirit of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">J<\/span>ob was in a<\/li>\n<li>better tune: <em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">S<\/span>hall we<\/em> (saith he) <em>take good at <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">G<\/span>od&#8217;s\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>hands, and not be content to take evil also?<\/em>\u00a0 \u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">A<\/span>nd so of<\/li>\n<li>friends in a proportion. \u00a0 <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">T<\/span>his is certain, that a man<\/li>\n<li>that studieth revenge keeps his own wounds green,<\/li>\n<li>which otherwise would heal and do well. \u00a0 <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">P<\/span>ublic re-<\/li>\n<li>venges are for the most part fortunate; as that for the<\/li>\n<li>death of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">C<\/span>aesar; for the death of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">P<\/span>ertinax; for the<\/li>\n<li>death of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">H<\/span>enry the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">T<\/span>hird of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">F<\/span>rance; and many<\/li>\n<li>more. \u00a0 <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">B<\/span>ut in private revenges it is not so. \u00a0 <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">N<\/span>ay<\/li>\n<li>rather, vindictive persons live the life of witches;
